<image:caption>As a runner, volunteer, or spectator it is easy to enjoy the community event of the Turkey Trot. It is tradition for Thanksgiving to elicit thoughts of gratitude in our lives. Each year I emcee our event and then go home to my family and have a lavish meal. Not everyone in our community has that luxury though. That’s why, this year, I want to shed light on one of our local non-profit organizations who make a tremendous impact in fighting food insecurity in all of Western North Carolina: MANNA Food Bank.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Volunteer. Anyone can sign up to volunteer at MANNA, host a food drive, or become a donor. Participate in one of MANNA’s Turkey Drive’s this year. Annually, MANNA hosts a virtual Turkey Drive where folks can provide monetary donations to help MANNA meet the increased need during Thanksgiving. Additionally, MANNA is hosting an in-person Turkey Drive this year on November 4th from 10am-2pm at the Asheville Outlet Mall. Sign up for MANNA’s Advocacy News and Call For Action Newsletter. Receiving MANNA’s newsletter helps continue to raise awareness regarding regional food insecurity and provides up-to-date ways of how we all can pitch in to continue to support MANNA’s mission.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Refer to the relay’s guidance for van size and dimensions as they design each exchange zone to accommodate vans within a certain size range. Reserve a van AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. As soon as you think you might want to put together a relay team, reserve a van. Fifteen-passenger vans or large SUVs are the way to go. Space can be created by removing seats or storing items on top or secured to the vehicle's hitch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Backpacking the Wonderland Trail - When we first set up our permit online, we weren’t able to snag two of our preferred campsites for days seven and eight. This wasn’t an issue because we found two other sites down side trails from the Wonderland Trail. These two sites would give us the option to complete the Wonderland but add extra mileage. From our understanding, there could be an opportunity to adjust our permit when we picked it up. This is due to other groups changing their itinerary or canceling and walkup permit availability. Luckily, there were spots available at our ideal campsites and our permit was easily adjusted!</image:title>

<image:caption>We had excellent luck with weather and trail conditions. The daytime was sunny and warm, the evening was cool and dry. The only exception to this was at Mowich Lake. That evening, at 5,000 ft, it decided to sprinkle on us after dinner. This seemed like perfect timing because we had already climbed into our tent for a few rounds of Uno and cans of wine. We even woke up to a salamander friend keeping warm between our ground tarp and tent.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Backpacking the Wonderland Trail - This was probably my favorite day! We found the magical St. Andrews Lake at the top of our climb for the day. We stopped to have lunch here and dipped our toes in the water. It felt good to dry our shirts and socks on a rock by the lake before continuing downhill to camp.</image:title>
<image:caption>By the time we made it to what seemed like the North Puyallup Campsite, we were exhausted and hungry. We decided to set up camp with the most amazing view. We couldn’t believe we beat other campers to this spot. It seemed like a dream. After setting up the tent, we changed into camp clothes and went looking for a water source, the privy and bear pole. We came across two others setting up camp. They pointed us in the direction of the restroom and bear pole then asked if we were camping across the wall. We were confused by this and told them we snagged a spot over by the brick wall but not on the other side of it. They let us know we were actually set up at the viewpoint, where people can look out to the water below.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Backpacking the Wonderland Trail - We took advantage of baby climbs and a big downhill for a 3 hour and 20 minute trip. We saw 2 bears today. One was far away and the other was much closer. It was truly amazing, especially with how many people were out today. Once we got off the trail and into the front country White River camp, we heard backup beeping noises, found a water fountain, and a parking lot with real bathrooms. Luxury! After filling up our water bottles the easy way, we walked through the parking lot and met a guy named Chris, his wife Janet, and their friend Bob. I jokingly offered them $20 for one of their Coors Light. Chris told us to come over to their truck and gave us 2 beers, free of charge! It was like hitting the lottery. We laughed and thanked them. We learned they are locals and did a section of the trail today. They offered us their last apple slice to share. We talked about the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed and how their granddaughter recently hiked the PCT and told them it was the best thing she’d ever done. After our three new friends finished their beers, they wished us well and handed us 2 pamplemousse La Croixs. We are still so thankful for their kindness and laughs.</image:title>
<image:caption>This was also our day to pick up another food cache! While grabbing our bucket, we met Sydney and Ben who were scoping out the food cache location prior to starting their hike. They asked for trail secrets and we talked about water being abundant and the amount of gratitude we have for being able to do this. After parting ways, we enjoyed our La Croixs in the sun with our lunch. Even though the black flies were relentless, we enjoyed laying in the sun near camp.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Backpacking the Wonderland Trail</image:title>
<image:caption>Almost there! This day felt long and the climbs felt longer. We had about 4.5 miles of climbing to do on tired legs after the previous day's 18 miler. This took us 5.5 hours. We didn’t have a true time set for wanting to reach Paradise. The only goal was to meet up at Reflection Lake for a quick lunch break with a view. We got to the lake, (only to find out later that it was Louise Lake – Reflection was further along the trail), sat down by the water for lunch, where a bird swooped down from a tree trying to take my vegan jerky. It grabbed my thumb with its talons as it missed the jerky then proceeded to watch from a tree above until we were done. Along this section of trail we found so many huckleberries. I ate approximately 700 of them and my friend AJ dubbed me “Huckleberry” as my trail name. I named her “Seabiscuit” on the first day – this was her first backpacking trip, she has a long stride, and is a super fast hiker! After lunch we had 1.9 miles until camp, mostly downhill. We finally arrived at the camp sign which points you back up another hill and looks like the trail or camp is new. Lots of broken roots, downed trees, and tossed dirt. This was our least favorite campsite. We also had a number of bear scares (bigfoot, is that you?) here. We heard things dropping from trees around us for hours. We saw low branches and bushes move. We saw shadows higher up above the camp. We set “trip lines” and arranged our trekking poles around the tent. We slept with a knife between us and a whistle around my neck. We never felt scared on the trip until this night. We also always saw other people at the campsites until this site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We woke up after a stressful night at Paradise and wanted to soak up our last morning in the woods. We had coffee and talked about how we weren’t ready to go back to reality. I never did end up writing in my trail journal for this day. I think I wanted to savor every part of it for me – internally. What I can say is, we met so many amazing people on our hike out! I also made sure to plug in my headphones to listen to the soundtrack of the youtube video that inspired this trip. It was glorious! Once we made it back to Longmire, I picked up my stamp for my National Parks Passport and then we headed over to the gift shop to grab a celebratory beer!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two of us had the Sawyer Squeeze which worked perfectly. One of us had Sawyer Squeeze Mini which was not as efficient since it has a slower flow rate as a smaller filter. Water along the Wonderland Trail is abundant. With so many rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls, it was easy for us to find clear, running water. There is nothing quite like (or as fresh as) balancing on a rock, in the middle of nowhere, to collect ice cold water pouring over perfectly placed, bright green moss.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Trail-running can be a fantastic way to spend quality time with yourself and connect with nature. Although graciously sharing the trail with others is an important part of the activity, sometimes we crave solitude in the forest and on mountaintops. Considering the growing population of Asheville and an increasing interest in outdoor recreation, this solitude can be difficult to find. Crowded trail-heads can sometimes feel inescapable, especially during the warmer months. Here are some of my favorite “lesser traveled” trails for wilderness running adventures: (All recommendations are difficult and intended for experienced runners who are used to technical terrain)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Summertime Running and the Handheld Bottle - A running hydration vest with bottles and/or hydration bladder is an option, especially for very long runs, though often overkill on shorter runs or races. Public water fountains are a runner’s best friend, though these are often sparsely spaced throughout town, and oftentimes sadly “out of order” (especially during a global pandemic). Hydration belts (think about a waist pack with bottles attached to it) are definitely an option, though they can sometimes be uncomfortable as they can tend to ride up the waistline. So, you ask, what other options are there? Enter the handheld water bottle.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6499f17d78243129b8aa9056/048235a4-44ff-4be0-916b-fbb1d91fc6b9/IMG_8829-scaled.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Summertime Running and the Handheld Bottle</image:title>
<image:caption>Capacity: For starters, there is the bottle’s capacity, which generally ranges from 10fl oz to 22fl oz. Going out for 30 minutes? The 10fl oz bottle should be all you need. Racing a marathon? A larger option, such as 18fl oz or 22fl oz, may be your best bet. It is unlikely you will find many bottles over 22fl oz because they would be too cumbersome to carry while running. Insulated versus Non-Insulated: Pay the premium for an insulated bottle and your fluids will maintain their original temperature for longer. On the flipside, the insulation will cost you a slight increase in weight.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6499f17d78243129b8aa9056/fc4d68f1-edaf-444d-be58-6b9ea681dd90/IMG_8835-scaled.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Summertime Running and the Handheld Bottle</image:title>
<image:caption>Hard Plastic versus Soft Plastic: Hard plastic bottles will hold their shape regardless of its contents, while the soft plastic will shrink in size when its contents are emptied. While the soft (also known as “collapsible”) bottles are helpful because they can be stuffed into your shorts’ pocket or crumpled into the ball of your fist and are also lighter weight, they can be a bit annoying when only partially full because they lose pressure and turgidity, causing them to literally collapse in your hand. Unlike many of the soft bottles, the hard plastic bottles will effectively squirt out fluids even when there are not many ounces remaining inside the bottle. We recommend trying both the hard and soft versions and determining what works best for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Trail Running Tips - Get a trail shoe. Working at a running specialty store, this is undoubtedly my number one suggestion. These specialized shoes are built to hold up to a variety of conditions you’ll encounter. When customers come into the store asking for a trail running shoe, the first thing I ask is what trails they plan to run. With that I have them consider the tread and the amount of protection needed and also the amount of cushion and need for comfort.</image:title>
<image:caption>I try to find a mix of comfort, cushion, grip, and rock protection, which really signifies something different to everyone. All trails are different which is a big factor when picking your shoes, but in the Asheville area you can always count on a few rocks, mud, and roots. For me, I choose a shoe that resembles what I wear on the road but with more protection and grip. My favorite: Hoka Speedgoat. Honorable mention: Brooks Cascadia, Saucony Peregrine</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Trail Running Tips - Find your nutrition.</image:title>
<image:caption>I like boiled potatoes and other complex carbs when I race, but I still love potato chips and M&M’s. Gels are excellent for a variety of reasons, especially their shelf life, but sometimes I need more solid food for longer runs and races. Running a few races overseas, I learned to train on the food that would be at the race. Wow, I still remember eating miso soup in Japan, avocados in California, a slice of pizza in Colorado, but my all time favorite will always be grabbing a Spam musubi in Hawaii. Foods that work for me may not work for other people and vice-versa. Bottom line: try different foods during your training and find out what works. My favorite besides Spam musubi: Spring gels. Honorable mention: Gu gels, homemade oatmeal cookies.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Trail Running Tips - Buy a map or book guide and learn the area.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing beats learning a trail by actually running it, but having a map or guidebook sure helps. Many of us will use an app on a smartphone but cell coverage is not always reliable so a GPS watch like a Garmin is a good idea. I love that digital maps are available and this is another aspect of trail running that has greatly improved in the past 30 years. Still, I tend to always buy a hard copy initially. My favorite: Asheville Trail Running, Hiking & Biking by Trish Brown. Honorable mention: Pisgah Map Company Trail Guide maps</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Black History Month - Michael Johnson (b. 1967)</image:title>
<image:caption>Often considered one of the greatest and most influential sprinters in the history of track and field. Johnson won an incredible four Olympic gold medals and eight World Championship gold medals during his career. He also once held the world and Olympic records in the 200m and 400m events, as well as in the indoor 400m event. Johnson competed in three Olympics – 1992, 1996, and 2000. Perhaps his most noteworthy achievement occurred during the 200m finals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when Johnson opened the 100m in 10.12 seconds and closed in an astonishing 19.32 seconds which was over three tenths of a second faster than his own record previously set at the Olympic Trials. A margin of three tenths a second would be the largest improvement on a 200m world record ever. No wonder he was known as the World’s Fastest Man.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Black History Month - Florence Griffith-Joyner (b. 1959) – Fastest Woman of all time… Need we say more?</image:title>
<image:caption>Known to most as “Flo Jo,” Joyner’s 100m (10.49s*) and 200m (21.34s) records set in 1988 still stand today (try running half way around the track in 21 seconds, we dare you). Tragically, Joyner’s life was cut way too short after suffering an epileptic seizure during her sleep at age 38 in 1998. Apart from her running prowess, Joyner was perhaps best known for her bold fashion style – think full-body sprinting suits, bright neon colors, painted six inch-long nails, and one-legged tights. *This time of 10.49s set during the 1988 Olympic Trials quarter finals still stands, though is widely believed to be illegitimate due to it being made possible by a significant tailwind present at the time of the race. The measurement of a wind speed of 0.0 m/s is widely believed to be due to a faulty wind gauge as many reports point to an actual wind speed of 5 m/s to 7 m/s. Even if the IAAF had decided to remove this result, she would still hold the WR with her 10.61s performance carried out during the finals on the next day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Black History Month - Jesse Owens (b. 1913)</image:title>
<image:caption>Jesse Owens is one of the most well-known track and field athletes of all time, and for very good reason. He was a long jump and sprinting specialist during a contentious time for black history. In what is now widely considered the “greatest 45 minutes in all of sports,” Owens set three world records (long jump, 220yd dash, and 220yd low hurdles) and tied another (100yd dash) while competing for Ohio State University at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Owens gained widespread fame during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. His gold medals earning performances in the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4 x 100 relay made him the most successful athlete at the games. As a black athlete, Owen’s performances stood blatantly in the face of Hitler’s racist myth of Aryan supremacy. Racism was obviously present in Nazi Germany, though the reality is that racism was also sadly prevalent in his home country. As Owen said, “I wasn’t invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn’t invited to the White House to shake hands with the president, either.” USA Track and Field’s highest honor, the Jesse Owens Award, is now named after Owens. "I let my feet spend as little time on the ground as possible. From the air, fast down, and from the ground, fast up." – Jesse Owens</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Black History Month - Marilyn Bevans (b. 1949)</image:title>
<image:caption>For a black lady growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, there may not have been a high school or college cross country or track team to join. No Title IX existed ensuring equal gender participation in sports either. There was hard work and determination though. And that’s what it took for Marilyn Bevans to overcome the many obstacles before her (being a black woman in the 70’s there was a long list of obstacles) and become the distance running legend that she was. Bevans was the first black woman to medal at the Boston Marathon (2nd place finish in 1977, 2:51:12). Another of her many accomplishments is being the first sub-three hour African-American female marathoner. Bevans qualified for the 1984 Trials in the marathon event, though late-career exercise induced asthma kept her from competing in the race.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Review: Salomon Advanced Skin 5 - By Whitney Waters</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been looking to replace my outdated packs that just weren’t doing what I needed them to. They bounced. They chaffed. They didn’t always hold what I needed. This pack, though—I tried it on and loved it immediately. After taking the pack on some longer trail runs and a couple of commute road runs, I’m convinced that this is the only pack I’ll wear from now on. For a more comprehensive overview about how Salomon Advanced Skin 5 performs, I’ve broken it down into a few categories that are important in a hydration vest:</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Review: Salomon Advanced Skin 5 - Storage</image:title>
<image:caption>Plenty of pockets! The side pockets are probably the most unusual and versatile feature. Each side of the vest has open pockets that are perfect for storing nutrition, buffs, or hats. They’re easy to access, and I had no issues with anything falling out of them. For items that need to be more secure, like phones and keys, there’s a large zippered pocket on the lower left front of the vest. It’s a perfect place to store my phone, which rests comfortable against my side with no bounce. The vest comes with two 500 ml collapsible water bottles that sit against the chest for easy access. They’re a little tough to get in initially, but you can easily drink from them without removing the bottle, which I would recommend. The back pouch can store a water bladder (not included) and has an insulated pouch to keep water cold. The outermost pocket is stretchy and expandable—perfect for storing a rain jacket or extra layer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Finally, if you have multiple running shoes in your closet, I highly recommend wearing the same type of shoe for each time trial. A minimally cushioned shoe is going to perform differently during a 5k time-trial compared to a softly cushioned shoe that weighs more and is designed for easier efforts. As someone who has run a track workout in an “everyday trainer” (Adidas Solar Glide for me) and a responsive more speed-oriented shoe (Adidas Boston Boost), I can promise you both shoes will perform differently in a time-trial. As long as your body can handle it, I would always recommend the lighter weight and more responsive shoe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Heat and Humidity: Our Summer Running Friends</image:title>
<image:caption>Humidity can play a major role in how our body responds to physical activity and how we feel during it. Humidity refers to the amount of moisture present in the air and is often measured on a scale of 0-100%. In Western North Carolina you will often see higher amounts of humidity in the early morning hours (when temperatures are lower) compared to the afternoon time when temperatures reach 80 degrees and above. The presence of humidity makes it increasingly harder for sweat to evaporate off a runner’s body and the physiological cooling mechanism we all rely on to lower our core body temperature during physical activity does not work as effectively or efficiently. When I run and I see beads of sweat sitting on my shoulders I feel as if my pores cannot breathe and give my body the ventilation it so desperately desires while exercising in the summer. It can definitely make an early morning summer run uncomfortable!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Heat and Humidity: Our Summer Running Friends</image:title>
<image:caption>Second, regardless of when you run, there are measures you can take to combat intolerable humidity and warmer temperatures. Running in shaded areas (Hello, Montford!), running by bodies of water (Carrier Park anyone?), and taking walking breaks can all help you get through that warm uncomfortable run. It never hurts to carry water as well, especially if you plan on exercising for more than 30-45 minutes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fueling on the Run - There are so many options, how do I choose the right brand or flavor?</image:title>
<image:caption>Well, this is often a personal preference. It is recommended to find what works and stick with it. “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke…” Some people tolerate certain flavors and consistencies better than others. Some people choose the gels and chews with more natural ingredients, such as Spring Energy, Huma, or Honey Stinger. Some people love the seemingly endless flavor combinations that Gu Energy Labs offers. Some people opt for the caffeinated options, while others go caffeine-free. A lot of people find that a combination of an energy drink mix like Tailwind, Skratch or Maurten and an assortment of gels work well. Others gag every time they try to force a gel down, so they stick to the chewables from Skratch, Honey Stinger, Clif, or Gu. Keep in mind, it is recommended to consume a few big gulps of water/drink mix with each gel/chew to aid in digestion. In really hot weather, runners will often need to replenish their salt levels with electrolyte tablets, salty foods (pretzels, potato chips, etc), or electrolyte-heavy drink mixes. Also sometimes neglected are the post-run recovery calories. It is ideal to ingest some calories, ideally higher in protein, within ~30 minutes after your long or hard runs. This provides your body with the necessary building blocks to rebuild your muscles.</image:caption>

Tina, 32, is originally from California, moved to Asheville in June of 2018, taking the position of Assistant Winemaker at Biltmore. <image:caption>Janet Bensley is the self-proclaimed “senior” of the group of Maggots, having qualified for the Boston Marathon (her first) by running the 2018 Kiawah Island Marathon in 3:41 at the age of 65. Janet was a competitive gymnast through high school and college and then took up running for a brief couple of years, running her first marathon in 1980 at age 27. Following that, she only ran occasionally, as it fit into her career/schedule. Janet moved to the Asheville area in 2011 and started running regularly and seriously at that time and continues to train and race.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kelsey Hanger, 29, is a physical therapist at the WNC Baptist Home. Her mother got her started running when she was 8 years old and she has been running casually and competitively since. Kelsey ran cross country and track as an undergraduate student at Appalachian State and was then sidelined for several years following a hip fracture. She began running again in 2018 to train for the Asheville Biltmore marathon, where she ran a 3:25 in 2019 and qualified for the Boston Marathon. This was her first marathon and qualifying for Boston was nowhere on her radar. After she finished the race, a friend texted her and asked if she had qualified and she responded "for what?!"</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Boston Marathon Preview: Jennifer Black</image:title>
<image:caption>Jennifer Black, 28, is a physical therapist in the Asheville area. She started running with her dad at age 11, when he convinced her to try out for the middle school track team in 8th grade and she has enjoyed competitive running ever since! Jennifer ran cross country and outdoor track for 4 years at Providence High School in Charlotte, NC, and raced her first half marathon at age 15. She ran cross country, indoor, & outdoor track for UNC Asheville from 2009-2013 and has continued to train and race every year since then. She started running the Tuesday track workout with the Maggots when she moved back to Asheville in 2017 and has rarely missed a workout because it reminds her of her high school and college track days where you show up, your coach tells you what to do, you have the support of your team, and you can see the improvement in your running from doing tough workouts! Another benefit of the routine is meeting most of her training partners at the track workout, several who helped her train for her first marathon in Charleston, SC last year. She posted a time of 3:20 and qualified for her first Boston Marathon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What are you most looking forward to if this is your first Boston Marathon? “I’m looking forward to experiencing the most famous running event in the US! I can’t wait to see the course that everyone talks about, to feel the excitement of so many people who have worked hard to get to this race, to go to a race with so many spectators and supporters, and run on the same course as many professional runners that I admire! This race has been on my bucket list since I learned about marathons and I follow it every year.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jus’ Running and Norm’s Maggots, the store’s running club, have a long tradition of fielding a number of teams each year, often finishing in the top of their respective divisions. 2019 was no exception, with three Jus’ Running teams, plus a number of other teams featuring several Jus’ Running Race Team members. Norm’s Maggots Ultra Team was held together with some of Jus’ Running Race Team’s most veteran active members, Matt Roane, Anne Wheatly, Kurt Wilson, Andy Brouwer, and Craig Plunkard. Their sixth runner had to drop out just several hours before race start, forcing the team to complete all 210 miles with just five runners. 26 hours and seven minutes and they were the third fastest “Ultra” team to finish.</image:caption>

Operating out of their intimidating black Sprinter van, team Lady Regerts featured some of Jus’ Running’s quickest women, Cristyn Olenick, Emily Fagan, Kimzey Ellis, Jennifer Black, Carrie Jensen, and Erin Dalton. Finishing second among all-female Ultra teams was Jus’ Running’s other all-female team Legs Miserables (30:09), featuring Amanda Fox, Kelsey Hangar, Erin Day, Hayley Hucks, Rachel Veale (store employee) and Maggie DeLap.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It wasn’t all about the ladies though. Two of Jus’ Running’s fastest men traded their Jus’ Running kit for their Asheville Running Collective counterpart, racing with the coveted and highly-competitive Asheville Running Collective Open team. Devin Deholl and Luke Paulson joined 10 other Asheville area runners to finish first Overall and, arguably more importantly, out run the next closest team (longtime rival Charlotte Running Club) by over 25 minutes with a time of 19:32. Devin and Luke were joined by Mike Zeberkiewicz, Mark Driscoll, Javan Lapp, Caleb Masland, Alex Griggs, Michael Holland, Brian Skoglind, Jacob Montgomery, Derek Gibson, Ethan Coffey, and drivers Dane Cox and Frankie Adkins.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Running Buddies - When did you know you found a good running partner?</image:title>
<image:caption>(K) When we went on our first long run together and the miles passed by in a flash! Also, when we did the Fontandando 50k relay together with another friend from the track, Tatiana. We didn't know each other all that well at that point but we had such a fun girl's weekend. (J) When we discovered how much we had in common outside of running. We’re about the same age, have similar jobs, and have had a lot of similar personal and life experiences that we quickly bonded over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Running Buddies - When did you know you found a good running partner?</image:title>
<image:caption>(K) I took Cristyn and her dog, Paisley, out to Mills River for what I thought would be an easy 5-6 mile run. She took off at sub 6 pace and I chased her for about 11-12 miles. I knew then I had found a great running partner. (C) I was so nervous on that run and went out way too fast. We had a super fun time together that day, I remember not wanting it to end.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Running Buddies - When did you know you found a good running partner?</image:title>
<image:caption>(M) We had a blast traveling together to a race -- so much laughter all weekend. I knew on that road trip that we had one of those rare friendship bonds that seem so much harder to come by as you get older. After that race, we started weekly long runs together and with her encouragement, I started joining her for track workouts with Jus' Running. Our pace was right on par from the beginning, so it made running together easy and seamless. (S) I knew I found a good running partner when we started running at Bent Creek together. Even when I insisted on meeting early, Marissa always said yes. We enjoyed each other’s company and had the same pace, and I really enjoyed our long runs together. We could run for miles and the time would pass quickly.</image:caption>
